These definitions are far from the traditional conception of leadership. For most, the leader is the boss, and the people in the organization serve the boss. Those schooled in this traditional conception may find it hard to embrace servant leadership. They may see it as debasing or robbing them of their authority and even privileges. Perhaps this is why most educational-preparation programs do not focus on servant leadership. Considering the numerous schools and colleges that are attended by historically underserved students, one would think that servant leadership would be one of the major areas of discourse.

Even when leaders embrace the concept of servanthood, they may find it hard to implement in daily practice. Some university administrators, for example, espouse the principle of servant leadership, but fail the test of actual servant behavior. They may micromanage the campus, fail to provide resources to middle-management administrators, and cut back on paying faculty for additional courses. They fail to honor and serve their faculty through resources, autonomy, and respect.

Farrakhan addressed the gulf between espousing a principle and acting on it in daily life:

Now when “we serve,” on the plate that you’re serving your people must be The Answer—not to their “wants,” but to their needs, because every human need is a human right. So when you look at your people and see their needs, then as a “leader” or “one who aspires to leadership,” then you must examine your heart for “love,” and examine your heart for “service.”[4]
